Why Nutritional Care Matters for People Living with Mitochondrial Disease
7 Sep, 2026
Good nutrition is an important part of managing many rare neuromuscular conditions, including mitochondrial diseases. A new educational flyer, funded by Euro-NMD, highlights the vital role that nutritional care can play in supporting health, wellbeing and quality of life for people living with these conditions.

The resource explains why regular nutritional assessment is important and outlines some of the common challenges faced by people with neuromuscular diseases, including difficulties with chewing, swallowing and digestion, as well as changes in energy needs and body composition. It also provides practical guidance on monitoring nutritional status, managing symptoms and addressing concerns such as poor appetite, undernutrition, overweight and gastrointestinal issues.
For people affected by mitochondrial diseases, nutrition can have a significant impact on daily functioning, energy levels and overall health. Early identification of nutritional problems and access to personalised support can help individuals and families make informed decisions alongside their healthcare teams.
The flyer also emphasises the importance of coordinated, multidisciplinary care and strong communication between patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals to ensure that nutritional needs are recognised and addressed effectively.
IMP (mitopatients.org) is proud to be a member of Euro-NMD, the European Reference Network for rare neuromuscular diseases, and we are pleased to share resources that help improve care and outcomes for the mitochondrial disease community.
